Success is measured differently by everyone – each
person has their own unique vision of success. What one person believes is the
“top,” another person believes is just another step to an even higher goal. And
there’s nothing wrong with that! Each person has to decide ultimately what
“success” means to them and them alone, and then figure out a way to achieve
it. However, how to get there is often the same. There are a few things that
almost all successful people do, no matter what their own unique vision is.
Here are six rules
that pretty much every successful person follows.
1. Successful People
Don’t Procrastinate
Procrastination is
definitely your worst enemy when it comes to achieving your goals. You’ve
probably heard the saying “don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.”
That saying is
absolutely true when it comes to just about anything – whether you’re a blogger, running another type of online business or even just an employee at a company. No matter what you do for
a living, procrastination will do you absolutely no good and bring you only
stress, strain and problems.
Procrastination is
especially detrimental to the self employed, like bloggers and other entrepreneurs.
Since you don’t have
anyone standing over you watching your every move, you get to manage yourself.
Sounds like a dream come true, right? It is – unless you let procrastination
rear its ugly head. No one is going to make you do the things you need to do
except yourself, and if you put it off and put it off, you’ll end up being
stagnant. Get rid of procrastination by just doing the things you’ve got to do,
and then enjoying your free time afterwards.
2. Set Goals For
Yourself
Know where you want to
go and what your ultimate goal is at all times. Always keep your vision within
reach so you can consistently make sure that every move you make is bringing
you closer and closer to that goal.
It’s like going hiking
or walking without a destination. You’re putting in the effort, but where will
you ultimately end up? You have no idea – and in the business world, “walking
without aim” so to speak will keep you doing nothing but chasing your tail
around in circles.
For example, if you
have a blog and you want to get “x” amount of traffic within a year, know what you want and make
sure that the things you do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis are designed
to help you reach that goal.
3. Give Yourself Time
Very few successful
people ever achieved success overnight, and if they did, it most likely didn’t
last. Whether your idea of being successful is owning your own business no
matter how much money you make, or earning millions from a plan to make money online,
it’s not going to happen right away despite your best efforts.
Give yourself time to
get there. It’s going to take hard work and determination, and it’s not going
to happen in a week, in a month or even a year.
Many successful people took
years to get where they are now, but they simply kept moving forward because
they always had that dream and knew where they were going. If you own a blog,
don’t look at your stats in a week and wonder why you haven’t hit it big. Give
your goals time to develop.
4. Don’t Give Up, Keep Trying
When
you don’t see immediate results in whatever it is that you’re doing – whether
your internet advertising efforts aren’t making you money right
away or your boss doesn’t notice the weeks you spent putting together a killer
presentation – it can be easy to think that you’re not making a difference. It
is tempting to give up when you don’t see results from your hard work. But
that’s where you need to go back and look at number 3 – it takes time. If you
give up before you’ve given yourself enough time to see results, you’re never
going to get there.
Give
yourself a set time limit – such as a year or two years – to see something
really take shape and come to fruition. A blog, for example, may take a year to
even start getting regular visitors. That’s ok! Give yourself the time you
need, and never, ever give up on your goals! If you do find that something
isn’t working, try something else. Just don’t give up!
5. Make Mistakes
Everyone
makes mistakes, even successful people. In fact, making mistakes is a crucial
step to success!
There
are many important lessons to be learned that can only be learned through the
making of mistakes. So don’t be afraid of them. Don’t think that you have to be
perfect from the start.
Allow
yourself to be what you are – which is human – and give yourself grace when you
screw up. Just don’t wallow in it. When you do something wrong, learn from it,
fix it and move on.
For
example, say you launched an email marketing campaign that totally sunk. Does that
mean you should give up on email marketing all together? Of course not! You
just found one way that didn’t work. There are many, many other things you can
try and you will eventually find something that does work!
6. Befriend Your Competitors
Many
people think that their competitors are their rivals and even their arch
nemeses. This couldn’t be further from the truth!
There
is plenty of room out there for all kinds of successful businesses, especially
online. Don’t assume that your competitors must be beaten – instead, befriend
them! Share knowledge with them. This is especially important if you’re a
blogger. Don’t miss out on guest
blogging opportunities
and the like because you want to prove you’re bigger and better than other
similar blogs out there.
That
attitude will actually be detrimental to your success. Instead, know that the
market is open to many unique ways of offering the same products and services,
and everyone can co-exist together happily and successfully.
