The design of your company website
or blog has a huge impact on visitors. This is usually the
first glimpse they get of your business, so it’s important to make the right
impression.
If your site’s design
turns people off, it won’t matter how great your products are. That’s why it’s
crucial to pay attention to the following web design principles.
1. Use Responsive Web
Design
Responsive design allows your site to be viewed by any type of
device or browser. With so many people using smartphones and tablets to browse
the web today, it’s important that these visitors can view all of your content
properly.
Another approach is to
create a separate mobile site, but this involves complications that can be
avoided by simply using responsive design. By implementing responsive web
design, you can have one site that works for everyone.
2. Avoid Clutter
A cluttered
website is not only unappealing, it makes it hard for visitors to absorb
all of the information. If your pages are full of text, images, ads and
banners, people may not know where to look. There should be a certain amount of
space between design elements.
While images can be
appealing and eye-catching, you don’t want to have so many of them that it’s
distracting. The same goes for ads, videos, pop-ups and other design elements
that have the potential to give your site a cluttered look.
This is also something
to keep in mind when it comes to text. Long blocks of text are hard on the
eyes, so they should be split into smaller paragraphs. Headings and lists also
help to break up your text.
3. Make Sure Your Website is User
Friendly
If your
company website is difficult to navigate, you will lose visitors quickly.
It’s especially important that your call to action or order page is easy to find. Most
people won’t spend much time trying to figure out how to get to the order page,
so make sure there are clearly visible links to this page.
If your
site has multiple pages, you should keep in mind that people may land on
different pages. That’s why it’s important to have your most important
information on every page -or at least have a link to your main page that’s
easy to see.
4. Remember the Fold
The
fold is the part of your site that is visible without scrolling. Your key
information and call to action should be above the fold. If it’s below the
fold, you will lose anyone who doesn’t want to bother to scroll down.
5. Use Quality Images
The web
is becoming increasingly image-driven. While it may be tempting to use readily
available stock photos on your site, keep in mind that thousands of other sites
are using identical images. It’s better to invest in some original photography
or purchase the rights to better quality images to set your site apart.
6. Make Your Site Unique
It’s
hard to be unique in a world with millions of websites. One way to
differentiate yourself is to have a professional looking header and logo. If
your company doesn’t have a logo, it’s worth it to get one designed.
You can
also make your company website distinctive by using choosing catchy titles
for your articles and, as mentioned above, using quality images rather than
generic ones.
